Some things just fit better together. Peanut butter and jelly. Song and dance. Hugs and kisses. Mariah Carey and McDonald’s.
They may not seem like a natural pairing, but the superstar diva claims to have a lifelong affinity for the fast food chain, leading the two to combine for a holiday promotion that can land everybody — Carey fan or not — free food this holiday season.
First announced in November, the Mariah Menu is giving away one item a day to customers during the holidays, with the promotion running through December 24.
“All McDonald’s wants this holiday season is for you … to join Mariah Carey for 12 days of deals,” the company said in a release. “Because when an iconic holiday superstar is a fan of the Golden Arches, it’s only right to begin the season by gifting customers an entire menu full of free goodies.”
Customers need to download the McDonald’s app, then use it to place an order of at least $1. Each day that is done during the promotion period, they can get a free item from the Mariah Menu. That might be a Big Mac, a chocolate chip cookie, a cheeseburger, an apple pie, or something else.
Each day, a different item from the menu is available at no cost, provided the customer spends the minimum $1 on their order. Customers must place their regular order, then move to the deals section of the app to add the free Mariah item to their order.
“Some of my favorite memories with my kids are our family trips to McDonald’s, and of course, each of us has our go-to order. Mine is the cheeseburger, and I get it with extra pickles,” said Carey. “Bringing together some of our favorite food from McDonald’s with my all-time favorite season is a holiday wish come true.”
Seeing Carey at your neighborhood McDonald’s is probably a long shot at best, but seeing her menu on the app is simple.
“We couldn’t think of a better partner to help us celebrate the upcoming season,” said Jennifer Healan, a marketing vice president with McDonald’s USA. “Just like McDonald’s brings people around the table with their favorite orders, Mariah’s music connects us all during this time of the year. We’re so excited to team up to bring even more holiday cheer to our fans.”
As part of the promotion, Carey has helped create some throwback merchandise that will also be given away to select customers.
The next opportunity is on December 21, when customers can order that day’s menu item — a sausage McMuffin with egg. The first approximately 10,000 customers to do so on that day will win a t-shirt and throwback photo of Carey.
“I always get a sense of nostalgia when I see the Golden Arches, so creating throwback merch with one of my favorite photos from the ‘90s was really fun for me,” said Carey.
